Stress: A condition and a response to an emotion(s) or set of circumstances. Not an emotion itself, but accompanied by, and often exacerbated/perpetuated by, an emotion or emotions.
Why Stress?
• As unpleasant as it may seem, stress has a purpose: to communicate to the brain and the body that changes are needed.
• The problem occurs when the irritant or stressor continues to provoke the stress response, and the signals in the amygdala (part of the brain that governs fear, anger, and stress response) get overpowered and “stuck” in this gear.
• Chronic stress is linked to the six leading causes of death: heart disease, cancer, lung ailments, accidents, cirrhosis of the liver and suicide. It’s time we compassionately and effectively learn best practices to manage and reduce its effects.
Over the last 10 – 15 years, the number of individuals, schools and private businesses all over the world that have been taking stress management and wellness very seriously has increased exponentially. Life has changed drastically; and the pace of modern day living has accelerated at great speeds. This has interfered with the natural functioning of our bodies, and has now been proven that our modern day illnesses, mostly originate from emotional and mental tension, diagnosed today as stress, anxiety, anger, and depression to name but a few. If not controlled, these can progress to further psychosomatic illnesses such as diabetes, asthma, ulcers, eczema, high blood pressure, digestive disorders, and so forth, eventually resulting in the more serious illnesses such as heart disease leading to heart attacks, cancer, strokes, etc.
This four-week course will include inspirational lectures/discussions, meditation, physical stretches and breath work as well as a variety of stress reducing tips, techniques and tools to help promote healthy living.
